So, there I was, working away at this adorable Macha shop in NYC on my Friday. All was swell until I had to make a phone call and the music (although amazing) was crazy loud. I could go outside, but I needed my computer. I didn’t have time to make it to another coffee place, and had found the perfect spot in the back.
To my surprise, as I venture my eyes around the room, I saw SONOS Play: 1 Speakers around the room. The exact kind I had in my home.
I had never seen this used in a business before, so I was curious about the navigation/security. But most importantly, curious if I can turn the speaker in the back down.
I pulled up my SONOS app (the app is required to set up and control your speakers) and made sure I was connected to their wifi, since these speakers function over wireless. (If you are new to SONOS, check out my posts on the pros and cons of the product, including details about how it works.)
To my surprise (but not really if you think about it), I was able to see what speaker was at the back and turn down the music on it without anyone noticing. Crazy right?!?
Now, before you start calling me a hacker or crazy customer, let me tell you what I could have done!
Once in the app, I could have done any of the following:
- Adjusted the volume to all speakers
- Changed the song
- Played or paused the song
- Changed the station entirely
- Basically – DJ’d the entire Macha Cafe.
I’m not saying I’m in the right for not doing more than I could have done. It was wrong, yes, but no one noticed Ans after my call, the music was back to normal and the staff continued on without a worry on the world.
It made me think though!
What can we learn from this?
Should companies use a system that requires a separate network, login, etc?
What other products in the store could have been controlled with the wireless internet password?
These are all questions I would love to hear your thoughts on.
And just one word of advice – please if you have devices set up like this in your store, make sure you set them up on a separate network! SONOS speakers are my favorite so I would recommend to any business owner, they look so cool and the sound is amazing! Just take that extra step to secure it.
PS: this was month’s ago and the company has since restricted this, so don’t go trying this out! 🙂
